Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi has inaugurated the 21-day “Awami Theatre Festival 2024,” marking an ambitious cultural celebration with a commitment to bring joy to Karachi’s public. Arts Council President Muhammad Ahmed Shah led the opening ceremony, attended by notable artists such as Nazar Hussain, Shakeel Siddiqui, Rauf Lala, Zakir Mastana, and many more.

During the inauguration, Shah emphasized that the festival’s mission is to spread happiness, adding that it may extend beyond the planned three weeks. “This festival is for the people of Pakistan,” Shah said, underlining his commitment to support both local and international talent without favoritism. With limited resources but a dedication to free entertainment, Shah also highlighted that seating will be first-come, first-served, ensuring inclusivity across social classes.

In a first for the festival, performances will be held indoors in an air-conditioned auditorium, offering comfort for attendees. The festival presents plays in multiple languages, including Urdu, Sindhi, Pashto, and Saraiki, to reflect the city’s diverse cultural tapestry.

The event kicked off with Khwaish (“Desire”), an educational play by writer-director Shakeel Shah, exploring the consequences of unchecked desires through the story of a woman who finds her wishes come true, but at a tragic cost.
