At a media dialogue session held on Thursday, September 12th, at the Malaysian High Commission in Islamabad, H.E. Ambassador Dato’ Mohammad Azhar Mazlan highlighted the importance of media, referring to them as the “eyes and ears of Pakistan”—a phrase that coincidentally aligns with Pakistan Observer’s tagline for the last 36 years.

The ambassador reflected on the strong ties between Pakistan and Malaysia, noting that diplomatic relations were established in 1957, with Pakistan being among the first countries to open its high commission in Kuala Lumpur. He emphasized the robust people-to-people connection between the two nations, though he acknowledged that more collaboration could enhance this bond. Currently, 166,000 Pakistanis reside and work in Malaysia, contributing over USD 250 million in remittances, and playing a crucial role in Malaysia’s development.

Ambassador Mazlan encouraged greater trade and communication between the two countries, noting that Malaysia serves as a gateway to ASEAN markets. He urged Pakistani businesses to explore opportunities beyond traditional partners, and stressed Pakistan’s strategic geographic importance to Malaysia. He also expressed Malaysia’s interest in green technology collaborations and underscored the potential for companies like Petronas in the Pakistani market. Touching on education, he mentioned that 5,000 Pakistani students are currently studying in Malaysia, with hopes to increase this number to strengthen ties. In defense cooperation, while progress has been made, he said there is room for further enhancement. The ambassador commended the success of Pakistanis in Malaysia, many of whom lead industries like textiles and restaurants, and concluded by reiterating Malaysia’s goal to diversify its economy with Pakistan as a key partner.

He ended by congratulating Pakistan’s newly appointed Foreign Secretary, Ms. Amna Baloch.
