Coastal areas in Pakistan, especially Karachi and Hyderabad brace a rare cyclone, as provincial authorities closed schools amid rain emergency. A deep depression has now developed into a cyclonic storm named ASNA, Met Office said.

The cyclonic storm is expected to hover over Arabian Sea in next couple of days. In response to very heavy rains affecting Karachi in Pakistan and parts of Kutch district in Gujarat, India, schools were closed in both regions.

Pakistan Met Office shared a new update as deep depression in the Arabian Sea developed into Cyclonic Storm ‘ASNA’ after moving westward in the past several hours.

As per the latest updates, the cyclonic storm is around 170 km southeast of the provincial capital Karachi and 88 km south of Kati Bandar. The storm is expected to continue its movement towards the west or northwest.

Under new weather conditions, there will be widespread rain and wind thunderstorms, with varying intensities of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across in several region in the SouthEast region including Tharparker, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Hyderabad, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Jamshoro, and Dadu.

Meanwhile, Balochistan cities like Hub, Lasbella, Awaran, Keach, and Gwadar are also witnessing heavy rains that will led to waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas of the Sindh-Makran coast.

As authorities are on their toes, PMD’s cyclone warning center is closely monitoring the storm and will issue further updates.
