LAHORE – The water level at the major reservoir Tarbela Dam has reached the maximum storage level due to widespread monsoon rains in the upper parts of Pakistan.
The water level at Tarbela Dam reached 1550 feet above mean sea level on Monday, the maximum conservation level with live storage of 5.766 million acre-feet. The minimum operating level at Tarbela Dam is 1402 feet.
The water level at Mangla Dam reached 1213.8 feet as against a maximum conservation level of 1242 feet and minimum operating level of 1050 feet. Live storage at Mangla Dam was 5.169 MAF.
The water level at Chashma reached 643.6 feet with live storage of 0.102 MAF as against the minimum operating level of 638.15 feet and maximum conservation level of 649 feet.
Filling of Tarbela Dam to its maximum conservation level is a good sign for irrigated agriculture and generation of green, clean and affordable hydel electricity in the country.
Tarbela Dam has been playing a key role for national economy and social uplift in Pakistan since its inception by providing water for agriculture at a time when it is much needed, controlling floods and generating low cost hydel electricity.
