LONDON – In the early general elections 2024 in the UK, the Labour Party has secured a victory after 14 years, ending the Conservative Party’s rule, which means Sir Keir Starmer will be the new Prime Minister.
The results of the general elections in the UK are still being received. Out of 650 seats, results for 585 seats have been received, with the Labour Party leading with 390 seats, Conservatives with 98, Liberal Democrats with 48, and the Reform Party with 4 seats.
Seats to form govt:
To form a government, 326 seats out of 650 in Parliament are required, and the Labour Party is in a position to form the government.
According to exit polls, Labour is expected to get 401 seats, Conservatives 163, Liberal Democrats 50, Scottish National Party 8, and Reform UK 4 seats.
Labour leader of Pakistani origin Naz Shah has won from Bradford West, while Labour member of Pakistani origin Yasmin Qureshi has successfully defended her seat for the third time.
Labour Party’s Naushaba Khan defeated the Conservative candidate.
Rishi Sunak succeeded in winning his seat from North Yorkshire while British Lord Chancellor and Justice Minister Alexander John Gervais Chalk faced a significant defeat.
Conservative Lord Penny Mordaunt also failed to retain her seat.
Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also won the Islington seat as an independent candidate.
Reform leader Nigel Farage also secured a victory in the Clacton seat, marking his first win after participating in elections eight times.
According to media reports, Workers Party leader George Galloway lost his Rochdale seat. Galloway had won a by-election on this seat following the death of Labour leader Sir Tony Lloyd. He has been an MP three times between 2003 and 2015.
Rishi Sunak accepts defeat
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has conceded defeat in the elections, acknowledging the victory of the opposition Labour Party and congratulating Sir Keir Starmer on his success.

A total of 4515 candidates from various political parties participated in the elections.
Earlier, after the polling time ended in the British elections, the first result announced by British media was Bridget Phillipson’s victory for the Labour Party from Sunderland South.
After winning the Holborn and St Pancras seat in North London again, Sir Keir Starmer thanked his voters, saying this constituency is his home, his children grew up here, and his wife was also born here. This victory is a great honor for him.
The official results are expected to be announced today (Friday), after which the leader of the winning party will meet King Charles III, who will invite them to form the government.
According to the British parliamentary system, any party needs 326 seats to have a simple majority in Parliament.
Previously, the Conservative Party showed the worst performance with 156 seats in 1906.
The recent election results mark a surprising comeback for the Labour Party compared to the 2019 general elections, where the left-wing party faced its worst defeat since 1935.
