LONDON – The year 2024 represents a pivotal point for democracy around the globe, with around 40 countries preparing for elections.
Significant economies such as the US, the UK, and France are among those heading to the polls, potentially altering the global landscape as they represent 42% of the world’s GDP.
Earlier this year, nations including India, Russia, Pakistan and Bangladesh have already held their elections, paving the way for widespread democratic engagement.
United Kingdom Elections 2024
In the United Kingdom, the July 4 elections are highly anticipated. Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faces a strong challenge from Labour leader Keir Starmer.
As reported by The Guardian, Sunak is trailing by 20 points in the polls. Despite this, he remains hopeful, recently posting on X, “It’s not over until it’s over.”
Sunak’s campaign has featured slogans like “Don’t surrender your pension to Labour.” He also highlighted his faith, visiting the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in London with his wife, Akshata Murty, to seek blessings.
Keir Starmer, on the other hand, focuses on Labour’s priority of wealth creation, aiming to end the 14-year Conservative rule that has been marked by Brexit and frequent changes in leadership.
He emphasizes that wealth creation is Labour’s “number one priority,” seeking to bring stability and growth.
