TEHRAN — An Israeli missile has hit Iran, local media reported on Friday. There have been reports of explosions in the central province of Isfahan in Iran, which have resulted in the suspension of flights over several cities.
Israel had previously warned that it would respond to any attack by Iran, and as a result, Iran is on high alert. In its first-ever direct attack on Israel, Iran fired more than 300 drones and missiles, almost all of which were intercepted by Israeli air defences with the support of the US, UK, and other allies.
This attack by Iran was in retaliation for an Israeli strike that killed senior Iranian commanders in Syria on 1 April.
Isfahan province has a large air base, a significant missile production complex, and several nuclear sites. According to Iran’s Fars news agency, explosions were heard near Isfahan International Airport and an army base in Isfahan City, which prompted the activation of local air defence systems.
A video posted on BBC Persian’s Instagram account shows the sound of what appears to be anti-aircraft guns in Isfahan province.
