Cabinet Approves Kuwait Defence Pact, Transfers Powers to KP Governor

Cabinet Approves Kuwait Defence Pact Transfers Powers To Kp Governor

The federal cabinet on Wednesday approved a defence cooperation pact between Pakistan and Kuwait, paving the way for enhanced collaboration between the two countries in various defence-related fields.

The approval was granted at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad.

Pakistan and Kuwait signed the agreement on June 11, 2023, covering cooperation in military production, electronic communication systems, scientific research, military media, and cultural and sports activities.

The pact provides for the establishment of a joint military committee to supervise its implementation and coordinate activities, including joint military exercises, official visits and other collaborative initiatives.

The agreement will remain effective for five years, with automatic extensions unless either country decides to withdraw. Both sides are also required to safeguard classified military information and settle any disputes through diplomatic consultations. Kuwait ratified the agreement on July 19, 2023.

KP Governor to Handle Administrative Powers

The cabinet also approved the transfer of powers previously delegated to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister to the governor to manage routine administrative affairs during the ongoing emergency in the province.

According to an official statement, the measure is intended to ensure the smooth functioning of government affairs and strengthen administrative governance in KP.

The governor will be required to submit a monthly report to the federal government detailing the exercise of the transferred powers.

The cabinet welcomed the arrangement and expressed confidence that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Advisory Council, under the governor’s leadership, would work towards public welfare, provincial development, and the restoration of peace and security.
