ISLAMABAD – The federal caretaker government has formed a high-powered investigation team to probe malicious social media campaigns against Supreme Court judges.
The incumbent authorities started action as the country’s apex court batted Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf from using its iconic cricket bat symbol for the upcoming polls and what came after was hate campaigns against the country’s top judges on social media sites.
As the matter appeared in trending section online, FIA issued a notification about the committee that was formed under Section 30 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016. The investigators of the six-member body will do a detailed probe and will submit the report for action.
Additional DG of the Federal Investigation Agency’s cybercrime wing will lead the team and it includes members of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the deputy inspector general of Islamabad Police and any other co-opted member.
The high-powered body will find facts behind malicious social media campaigns attempting to malign the image of honorable judges. The preliminary findings will be submitted to the Ministry of Interior within two weeks.
The judiciary is often targeted by political parties, critics, and activists when a decision is taken against one group. Such campaigns against judges are condemnable, and authorities should look into issue of anti-judiciary derogatory campaign on social media.
