India thump Pakistan by 7 wickets with 20 overs remaining in World Cup blockbuster clash

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s excellent 86 after a combined effort from the bowlers led Men in Blue to a dominant 7-wicket victory over Pakistan in the blockbuster ICC World Cup 2023 clash on Saturday.

Chasing not-so-difficult 192, the hosts easily knocked off the winning runs for the loss of a mere three players and 117 balls to spare.

Team Green will be feeling today’s upset over the next few days as they were in a strong position at one stage before effectively losing the plot towards the tail-end of their innings.

Indian skipper and flamboyant hitter Rohit Sharma gave his side major boost but Shubman Gill returned early on mere 16 in the third over.

As hosts lost first wicket on 26, Sharma anchored 56-run partnership with star batter Virat Kohli. The latter returned early as Hasan Ali struck in the 10th over. Despite Kohli’s upset, Indian skipper continued struggle and crossed 150-run mark in 21 overs.

After registering 86, Sharma returned on 22nd over, and remained top-scorer for his side, courtesy of six boundaries and as some maximums.

Later in the game, right-handed batter Shreyas Iyer took control and anchored match-winning 36-run partnership with KL Rahul, who scored 19 not out. Iyer’s 62-ball 53 featured three boundaries and two sixes.

In the first innings, Shaheen Shah Afridi got two scalps and Hasan Ali made one wicket. Pakistan aye top position in the game, looking to touch 300-run mark, but middle order and tail enders crumbled like house of cards.

Imam-ul-Haq, and Abdullah Shafique gave a slight push to Men in Green but latter was hit by pacer Mohammed Siraj in the eighth over.  He returned to pavilion on 20 off 24 , hitting three boundaries. Imam-ul-Haq the continued onslaught with Babar Azam before Hardik Pandya got him caught behind in the 13th over.

Star player and captain Babar and flamboyant hitter Mohammad Rizwan anchored the innings for Green Shirts, they contributed 82 runs, and Babar got his first half-century against India in the ODI. He was however cleaned up by Mohammed Siraj on the next delivery.

Pakistani team was jolted after Babar’s return and ran and fell like thud with their other set batter Mohammad Rizwan also returning midst game. He scored 49 off 69 deliveries, courtesy of seven boundaries.

Team Green lost last eight members wickets for just 36 runs and were eventually bundled out on 191 after Hasan Ali’s brief retaliation with a 19-ball 12.

Previously, Abdullah Shafique was removed by talented pacer Mohammed Siraj in the eighth over. Babar Azam was eventually cleaned up by Mohammed Siraj on the next delivery to mark India’s comeback.

Abdullah Shafique returned on mere 20 whereas Imamul Haq contributed 36 against the Men in Blue.

Babar Azam joined Imam and the pair put up a 32-run partnership before Hardik Pandya flummoxed Imam. Imam scored 38-ball 36, clobbering six fours.

The contest marked the first instance of Pakistan and India playing a One-Day International against each other on Indian soil after 10 years. Their last bilateral meeting resulted in Pakistan defeating the hosts 2-1.

Both the sides entered this contest after wins in their opening matches. India beat Australia in Chennai and Afghanistan in Delhi and Pakistan signed off their memorable trip to Hyderabad by recording the highest-ever chase in the history of World Cup, thanks to gutsy centuries from Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan, on Tuesday. Babar Azam’s side kicked off their World Cup campaign with a comfortable 81-run win over the Netherlands.

Though Pakistan enjoy a positive win/loss ratio over India, they are yet to defeat them in a 50-over World Cup match.
