The foreign ministry of Iran said it supports an inclusive government, peace, and stability in Afghanistan. Speaking at a press conference, Nasser Kanani, spokesperson for the Iranian foreign ministry, said that Iran’s foreign policy toward Afghanistan is “principled, clear and without flaws.”
Kanani noted that his country opposes the presence of foreign actors in Afghanistan under any pretext and also opposes foreign intervention in the country.
He also stated that his country supports the fight against drug production and trafficking in Afghanistan.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s policy toward Afghanistan is pretty clear. It is neither dualistic nor contradictory,” Kanani added.
Following China, on Monday Iran determined its position toward the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Iran’s approach towards the current Afghan government: 1.Supporting peace and stability in Afghanistan 2.Supports an inclusive government with the participation of all ethnic groups.
3.Against the re-appearance of foreign actors in Afghanistan 4.Opposing the use of Afghan soil under the pretext of terrorism 5.Against foreign intervention in Afghanistan Kanani noted that Tehran will seek bilateral meetings with the Islamic Emirate as well as multilateral meetings with the countries in the region, to unify the views of nations in the region and draw attention from across the world to solving the issue of Afghanistan.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is working to improve the security situation in Afghanistan and to help in the formation of an inclusive government, which the Islamic Republic of Iran will take seriously and responsibly in regional frameworks and multilateral meetings,” Kanani added.
“It appears that they agreed in the Samarkand meeting that their policies should be similar towards the current government of Afghanistan,” Tariq Farhadi, a political analyst.
In the meantime, the Islamic Emirate said that it wants more economic cooperation and good interaction with Tehran. “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan upholds its obligations and principles, and we also do not want Afghanistan to be unstable any longer. We have sent this message to all the countries near and far that Afghanistan has become secure. This security requires cooperation and is crucial for maintaining stability in the region,” Zabihullah Mujahid, the Islamic Emirate’s spokesman.
According to the spokesman for Iran’s foreign minister, the Helmand River water rights issue is one of the countries’ two most important bilateral issues, and Iran is asking the current government to follow through and take action.
