The federal government unveiled a new automobile policy aimed at making vehicles more affordable, promoting electric vehicles (EVs), boosting local manufacturing and increasing exports.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Prime Minister’s Adviser on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan announced the policy at a joint press conference in Islamabad.
Tarar said the policy would encourage competition, improve vehicle quality and provide affordable, environmentally friendly transportation. He added that existing incentives for petrol-powered vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc would remain unchanged.
The government has also reduced sales tax and exempted EV charging station equipment from customs duty to promote electric mobility and reduce dependence on imported fuel.
Haroon Akhtar said the policy rests on six pillars: affordable vehicles, export promotion, electric mobility, increased localisation, improved vehicle safety and transparency. He said reducing vehicle prices, particularly for cars below 1,300cc, was a key government priority. Measures to strengthen local manufacturing and automobile exports have also been introduced.
Tarar said greater competition in the automobile market would encourage innovation, improve consumer facilities and create employment opportunities.
