The Senate’s standing committee in its meeting that was chaired by Senator Anwarul Haq Kakar and attended by a number of the members of the Upper House, on Monday asked why the Board of Directors (BoD) of the Employees Old Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) remained unchanged since 2013.

While reviewing the expenses and disputes of EOBI, Senator Shahadat Awan asked about the details of expenses. He was informed that the total expenses of the EOBI were around Rs1.97 billion per year.

However, the EOBI Chairperson Naheed Shah Durrani did not provide the details of these expenses.

In the previous meeting dated May 8, the EOBI officials had informed that the final challan has been submitted against all the accused and a summary was also submitted to Cabinet for change of Board of Director Members.

However, the documents submitted by EOBI showed otherwise, Senator Shahadat Awan added.

Senator Shahadat also inquired about the current evaluation of disputed properties. Naheed Shah Durrani, Chairperson EOBI maintained that it was quite difficult to assess the current value of the alleged properties however, in 2013 evaluation was conducted through NESPAK and its details would be submitted before the committee.

The Chairman of the Senate’s Committee directed the EOBI Chairperson and Ministry of Overseas to submit all the required documents in the next meeting.

In the last meeting, Naheed Shah Durrani had maintained that since the devolution, both the Punjab and Sindh Province had refused to accept EOBI as a federal subject and that is why its members have not been replaced in all these years.

Earlier, the Senate Committee unanimously passed the Bill titled “The Emigration (Amendment) Bill, 2023.” The bill aimed to provide ease to emigrants by allowing them to appear in person or virtually for registration of names by their protectors, Senator Shahadat Awan apprised.

The meeting was attended by Senator Shaheen Khalid Butt, Minister of State for Law and Justice Senator Shahadat Awan, Senator Rana Mahmood Ul Hassan, Senator Prince Ahmed Omer Ahmed Zai, Chairpersons EOBI Naheed Shah Durrani, DG Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment Akram Ali Khawaja, Joint Secretary for MOPHRD Muhammad Wishaq and other concerned officers were also in attendance.
