In occupied Kashmir, the families of the victims of Kupwara massacre continue to await justice even after the passing of twenty eight years of the deadly carnage.
According to Kashmir Media Service, on 27th January in 1994, a day after India’s Republic Day, Indian troops had massacred 27 civilians in Kup-wara town. Kupwara massacre was carried out by Indian troops to punish people for observing shut-down on January 26.
Local people had told the media and investiga-tion agencies that a day before the carnage took place, an Indian army officer had asked the local shopkeepers not to observe shutdown and attend the Indian Republic Day celebrations at the local camp.
However, the shopkeepers didn’t turn up at the celebrations. But the next day, when they were opening their shops, Indian soldiers came in trucks and fired at them indiscriminately, killing 27 people and injuring scores others.
APHC leaders, including Shabbir Ahmed Dar, Abdul Ahad Parra, Ghulam Nabi Waseem, Dr Musaib Ahmad, Abdul Samad Inqilabi, Syed Aijaz Rehmani, and other leaders in their statements re-minded the international community about its negli-gence by not putting pressure on India to arrest the killers of these innocent people.
They deplored that Indian troops involved in Kupwara massacre and other bloodbaths in IIOJK have not been punished till date, adding that massa-cres would not stop Kashmiris from taking the free-dom struggle to logical conclusion.
They said the gruesome massacres in IIOJK are meant to instill fear and change demography of the territory but the world community have maintained a criminal silence over the killing of innocent Kashmiris and hoped that international community would take appropriate action against the culprits.—INP
