The chief of JUI-F Maulana Fazlur Rehman said on Tuesday his protests were aimed at ousting Prime Minister Imran Khan as the Govt was “incompetent and illegitimate” installed after a rigged election last year.
He told a news conference in the capital, “We have decided to march on Islamabad. Our basic demand is that the people who’ve got no right to rule should resign immediately.”
He said that the government has said it wanted negotiations with the opposition while vowing that no one would be allowed to paralyze life in the capital.
Meanwhile, head of opposition’s Rehbar Committee Akram Durani on Tuesday contacted head of committee formed by government Pervaiz Khattak to discuss JUI-F’s demands but Khattak said he will contact rehbar committee after consulting with other members of government committee.
Durrani confirmed that he has made contacts with Pervaiz Khattak and Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjarani. He said government committee was told that the stance of Rehbar Committee has not changed. He added that government committee would inform after discussing the matter that wheather they want talks or not.
A meeting agreed between Sadiq Sanjrani and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidri earlier was called off after instructions from Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
On the other hand, the Pakistan Bar Council on Tuesday said the country’s legal fraternity will “not hesitate to launch a nationwide campaign of protest” if the government denies the participants of the upcoming ‘Azadi March’ their constitutional right to protest.
PCB Vice-Chairman Syed Amjad Shah expressed grave concern over the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa govern-ment’s attempt to deny people their legitimate constitutional right of protest and at attempts to bring amendments to relevant laws.
“If any constitutional step either to make any draconian law or forcefully deny people their legitimate constitutional right of protest, the legal fraternity will oppose the same tooth and nail and will not hesitate even to launch a nationwide campaign of protests against such actions of the government,” read the statement.
