ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved 2-year extension for Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, allowing him to continue serving as Chief of Air Staff beyond his current term.
The extension will take effect after the completion of his five-year tenure in March 2026.
The move ensures continuity in the leadership of the Pakistan Air Force and reflects the government’s confidence in Air Chief Marshal Sidhu’s guidance of the force during a critical period of regional security and modernization initiatives.
Air Chief Zaheer Sidhu joined Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in1986, beginning his career as a fighter pilot in the GD (Pilot) branch. Over the years, he has held key operational and command positions, including leading a fighter squadron, a flying wing, an operational airbase, and regional air commands.
He has also served in senior staff and administrative roles, such as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff, Director General of Projects, and Deputy Chief of Air Staff for Air Defence and Administration. Sidhu received advanced military education from the Combat Commanders School, Air War College in Pakistan, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the UK.
Recognized for his distinguished service, he has been awarded several high-level military honors, including the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Hilal-i-Imtiaz, and Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military). Appointed Chief of Air Staff on 17 March 2021, he continues to lead the PAF, overseeing national air defense, strategic deterrence, and modernization programs.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also approved appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir to serve simultaneously as Chief of Army Staff and Chief of the Defence Forces, forwarding the recommendation to the Presidency. The five-year appointment makes him the first-ever officer to hold the position of Chief of the Defence Forces in Pakistan’s history.
