ISLAMABAD – Electricity prices continue to rise, and coming months are expected to become even tougher as further tariff increases are expected amid IMF-backed adjustments and ongoing economic pressures. In such dire situation, consumers need to be more cautious about their usage.
By monitoring daily electricity consumption and adopting smarter habits, masses can reduce unnecessary load on their bills and better manage rising costs. New digital tools like the “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” app also offer users greater control by allowing them to track and submit their own meter readings, helping ensure more accurate billing and improved transparency.
“Apna Meter, Apni Reading” App
Pakistani government officially launched mobile application “Apna Meter, Apni Reading”, allowing consumers to take control of their own electricity meter readings and directly send them to authorities. This high-impact initiative, introduced across the country, is being hailed as a game-changing step designed to bring transparency, accountability, and relief to millions of electricity users who have long complained about inflated and inaccurate bills.
The core objective of this powerful new system is to eliminate the long-standing issue of overbilling and restore public trust in electricity distribution companies. Under the initiative, consumers will no longer be entirely dependent on meter readers—who have often been accused of delays, errors, and even manipulation.
Instead, users will now become their own meter readers.
- Android users can download the app from the Google Play Store, while iPhone users can access it through the App Store.
- After installation, users must register using their electricity Consumer ID.
- On the designated Meter Reading Day mentioned on the electricity bill, users are required to take a clear photo of their electricity meter.
- The image must then be uploaded through the app before the deadline, ensuring that the final bill is generated based on the actual reading provided by the consumer.
Officials claim that this system will end incorrect or inflated meter readings, and remove delays in reporting consumption data. It will also prevent human error and potential manipulation in the traditional reading process, and ensure real-time and accurate data transmission to government systems.
This means electricity bills will now be based on verified user-submitted readings, drastically reducing disputes and complaints.
Launched under “Uraan Pakistan” program, the app has been developed by the Power Information Technology Company under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and the special direction of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Government officials describe it as a major milestone in Pakistan’s Digital Transformation agenda, aimed at modernizing public service delivery and increasing transparency in essential utilities.
If successfully implemented, the initiative could save consumers from unexpected high electricity bills, reduce dependency on manual meter reading staff, strengthen trust between citizens and power distribution companies and to push Pakistan further into a digitally driven governance model.
