RAWALPINDI – Heavy rain in twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi inundated low-lying areas and raised the water level in Lai Nullah, promoting authorities in Rawalpindi to close all educational institutions for a day (1 September 2026).
In a post on X shared earlier in the day, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said that the water level in Lai Nullah had surged to 29 feet at Kattarian and 23.5 feet at Gawalmandi, sparking evacuation.
PMD data till 8:20am on 1 September 2026 showed that Saidpur received 104mm of rainfall, 157mm in Golra, 72mm in Bokra, 155 mm at the PMD site near H-8/2, 74mm at Kutchery, 201mm at Shamsabad, 86mm at Pir Widhai, 186mm at New Kattarian.
As the heavy rain disrupted traffic on major key roads in twin cities, the Rawalpindi deputy commissioner announced a holiday today for educational institutions for the safety students.
As the Met Office has forecast further rainfall under the ongoing monsoon spell, parents and students are wondering whether schools will remain closed on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
So far, the Rawalpindi district administration has not announced another holiday for schools. Therefore, educational institutions are expected to follow their regular schedule unless a new notification is issued in view of the weather conditions.
September 2 is also an important day for students across Punjab, as all nine educational boards are scheduled to announce the Class 9 results for the First Annual Examinations 2026 on Wednesday.
