ISLAMABAD – WhatsApp will stop supporting older Android phones from September 8, 2026, leaving users of devices running Android 5.0 and 5.1 unable to continue using the messaging app unless they upgrade to a supported device.
WhatsApp’s official support information said that the platform will support only Android 6 and newer versions from September 8.
The company regularly reviews supported operating systems and removes older versions that have fewer users or may lack the latest security updates and features required to run WhatsApp.
Which Android phones will lose WhatsApp support?
The change will affect Android smartphones running operating systems older than Android 6. Users with phones running Android 5.0 or Android 5.1 should check their device software before the deadline.
WhatsApp said users will receive notifications and reminders before support for their operating system ends.
What should WhatsApp users do?
Users with affected smartphones should check their Android version and, if possible, upgrade the operating system. If the device cannot be upgraded to Android 6 or later, users may need to switch to a newer smartphone to continue using WhatsApp.
Those planning to change devices should also ensure that their important WhatsApp chats, photos, videos and other media are backed up and transferred properly.
The move comes as WhatsApp continues to introduce new features and security improvements. Meta has recently announced several updates to WhatsApp, including new account-security tools and AI-powered features.
The company said ending support for older operating systems allows it to focus on newer devices while keeping pace with technological and security developments.
