ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast the onset of pre-monsoon rains across the country starting June 20 which are likely to continue intermittently until June 23.

The rains are expected to bring much-needed relief from the intense heatwave gripping many parts of the country, but may also pose risks of localized flooding and wind-related damage.

According to the PMD, moist air currents from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea will enter upper and central parts of Pakistan, while a westerly weather system is also expected to affect northern areas from June 20 onward.

Rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected in several regions including Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, and Peshawar. Some areas may experience heavy rainfall and hailstorms during this period.

Between June 21 and 23, similar weather conditions are predicted in southern and southwestern districts such as Zhob, Barkhan, Musakhel, Kalat, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, and Sahiwal. From June 22 to 24, rain with thunder and strong winds is also likely in Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, and Jacobabad.

The PMD warned of potential damage to electric poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels due to strong winds and lightning, particularly in Islamabad and other upper-central regions.

In response, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) issued an alert to all commissioners and deputy commissioners, warning of the risk of urban and flash flooding. PDMA stated that monsoon rainfall this year may be up to 25% higher than normal, and in cities like Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat and Rawalpindi, it could exceed normal levels by 40–60%.

To mitigate risks, PDMA has directed local administrations to launch public awareness campaigns, especially in vulnerable areas near rivers and streams. It also advised the use of mosque announcements to alert residents in low-lying rural areas in a timely manner.
