Visa-free entry for Chinese visitors proposed in Gilgit-Baltistan

Proposal To Allow Visa Free Entry For Chinese Nationals Into Gilgit Baltistan

GILGIT – A proposal to allow Chinese nationals to enter Gilgit-Baltistan without a visa, under an arrangement similar to the existing travel facility available to residents of the region visiting China’s Xinjiang province, was presented during a high-level meeting on Monday aimed at exploring measures to promote tourism and economic growth.

The proposal was discussed during a briefing on Gilgit-Baltistan’s development priorities attended by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, newly elected Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain, and former Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Qamar Zaman Kaira.

The officials briefing the participants said extending a visa-free entry facility to Chinese visitors, similar to the existing travel arrangement for Gilgit-Baltistan residents visiting China’s Xinjiang, could help attract more tourists, strengthen cross-border ties, and generate greater economic activity in the mountainous region.

The meeting also focused on several key development issues facing Gilgit-Baltistan. Officials recommended the construction of an international airport in Gilgit to improve connectivity and facilitate tourism, while also calling for urgent measures to address prolonged electricity load-shedding and the growing shortage of subsidised wheat.

Participants were informed that improvements in transport infrastructure, energy supply, and the availability of essential commodities are critical to supporting the region’s long-term economic development and improving the quality of life for local residents.

Speaking on the occasion, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Gilgit-Baltistan and assured participants of his full support for initiatives aimed at strengthening the region’s economy, improving infrastructure, and promoting tourism.

The proposed visa-free arrangement and other development recommendations are expected to be considered by the relevant authorities as part of broader efforts to enhance regional connectivity, facilitate cross-border cooperation, and unlock Gilgit-Baltistan’s tourism and investment potential.
