WASHINGTON/TEHRAN – The United States on Tuesday issued an urgent advisory instructing its citizens to immediately leave Iran as nationwide protests continue to intensify, raising concerns that the security situation could further deteriorate.
In a security alert, the US Embassy warned that ongoing demonstrations across Iran have resulted in arrests and injuries while heightened security measures have led to road closures, suspension of public transport and intermittent internet shutdowns.
The embassy said these developments pose a serious threat to the safety of American citizens in the country.
The advisory urged US nationals to depart Iran via land routes through Armenia or Turkey, provided it is safe to do so.
It also advised citizens to make alternative communication arrangements due to possible disruptions in internet and mobile services.
The embassy specifically cautioned dual US-Iranian nationals, noting that Iran does not recognise dual citizenship.
Such individuals were advised to leave Iran using their Iranian passports.
Americans who remain in Iran were advised to avoid protest areas, stay away from public gatherings and remain in secure locations until the situation stabilises.
