WASHINGTON – The United States on Monday signalled significant progress toward a potential agreement to end the Russia-Ukraine war, with President Donald Trump stating that his administration is “very close” to finalising a peace deal between the two countries.
Addressing a Thanksgiving ceremony at the White House, President Trump said thousands of soldiers had been killed in the conflict, but recent diplomatic engagement had led to “extraordinary progress” on a proposed settlement aimed at halting the war.
Trump said his administration had stopped eight conflicts in the past nine months and was now working to end another. He added that he had directed his special representative, Steve Witkoff, to travel to Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The president claimed only “a few remaining points of disagreement” were left before an agreement could be reached.
The White House, in a separate statement, confirmed that negotiations had moved forward at an unexpected pace but noted that additional discussions would be required on “several sensitive issues” before the deal could be finalised.
The latest development follows talks held several days earlier in Geneva, where senior American and Ukrainian officials discussed a 28-point US peace proposal. Following the meeting, both sides agreed to begin work on a new framework designed to end the conflict. President Trump has given Ukraine until November 27 to accept the proposed agreement, a deadline that has added urgency to the diplomatic push.
The further details of the proposal remain undisclosed while the officials from both Moscow and Kyiv have yet to comment publicly on the claimed progress.
