WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump has announced that countries engaging in trade with Iran will now face a hefty 25% tariff on “any and all business being done with the United States of America”.
Trump made the announcement via social media, making it clear that this new policy will be implemented immediately and will apply to all nations involved in business with Iran.
“Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America. This Order is final and conclusive. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” read the statement.
The move comes in the wake of ongoing anti-government protests in Iran, where reports suggest that nearly 490 individuals have lost their lives over the past two weeks due to a violent crackdown by Iranian authorities.
Human rights organizations, including several American groups, have condemned the government’s response to the protests, which have erupted across the country.
In response to these developments, Trump previously issued a stern warning to Iran, signaling potential severe consequences if the violence against protesters continues. “We are considering all options, including military action,” Trump said in a statement earlier this week. His administration has consistently expressed strong opposition to Iran’s handling of internal dissent.
The announcement adds to the growing economic and political pressure on Iran, which has already been facing multiple US sanctions.
