THE latest United Nations report has once again vindicated Pakistan’s position that the TTP continues to enjoy support and space from the Afghan Taliban authorities. The UN Security Council-mandated Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, in its 38th report, has made it clear that the Taliban’s continued support for the TTP has contributed to the rising frequency and lethality of terrorist attacks in Pakistan.
Covering the period from December 16, 2025, to June 9, 2026, the report states that the Afghan de facto authorities continued their support for the TTP, whose attacks against Pakistan escalated cross-border tensions and provoked military exchanges. It also points to growing operational and facilitation linkages among the TTP, Al Qaeda, ISIL-K and the Baloch Liberation Army, highlighting the increasingly complex terrorist threat emanating from Afghan territory. Pakistan has always desired peaceful, stable and cordial relations with Afghanistan. The two countries share deep historical, cultural and religious ties and peace along their long border is in the interest of both nations. Unfortunately, the continued presence and operation of terrorist groups from Afghan soil has seriously strained bilateral relations and undermined efforts to build mutual trust. The Afghan authorities must, therefore, recognize that providing space and safe havens to terrorist groups is not in the interest of Afghanistan itself. Terrorism cannot be contained by merely relocating militants from one part of the country to another. It requires decisive action against their leadership, training facilities, financing and logistical networks. Taliban authorities need to correct its course by ensuring that their territory is not used against Pakistan or any other country. Eliminating terrorist sanctuaries is essential not only for Pakistan’s security but also for lasting peace and stability across the region which will open opportunities for greater trade, investment and economic activities. A peaceful and secure environment can enable both countries to focus on their shared interests, strengthen connectivity and unlock the considerable economic potential of the region.
