After defeating India on the battlefield, Pakistan has now secured another important victory against India – this time in the field of agriculture, trade and intellectual property. The dismissal of India’s appeal by the Federal Court of Australia in the Basmati case is a significant achievement that has reaffirmed Pakistan’s legitimate right to the Basmati name and protected the interests of its farmers and exporters.
India’s Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority had sought exclusive rights over the word “Basmati” in Australia. The Australian court’s dismissal of the appeal has upheld the position that Pakistani producers and traders have an equally valid right to use the term. The decision has, therefore, prevented an attempt to monopolize a name that carries immense cultural, agricultural and commercial significance for Pakistan. The outcome is particularly important for our Basmati growers, millers and exporters. It protects their commercial and intellectual-property interests and preserves their right to market authentic Pakistani Basmati in Australia. More broadly, the decision strengthens Pakistan’s position in international markets and safeguards an important part of the country’s agricultural heritage and export identity. The Ministry of Commerce, under Federal Minister Jam Kamal Khan, deserves appreciation for coordinating with relevant national institutions and stakeholders to safeguard the country’s legitimate interests. This victory should now encourage us to build further on our agricultural strengths. Our Basmati enjoys a strong international reputation for its distinctive aroma, taste and quality. The government must capitalize on this advantage by improving production, quality standards, branding, packaging and access to international markets. Greater support must also be extended to farmers through modern farming techniques, quality inputs, research, improved irrigation and better access to markets. Strengthening the entire agricultural value chain will help increase productivity, improve farmers’ incomes and enhance our export earnings.
