LONDON – The authorities in the United Kingdom on Friday issued amber and yellow weather warnings amid an ongoing cold wave and snowfall across the country.
The UK Met Office has enforced an amber Cold Health Alert nationwide due to persistently freezing conditions. Severe snowfall is feared in Scotland, where some areas could receive up to 40 centimetres of snow, potentially disrupting transport services. Rail and flight delays and cancellations are also expected.
The Met Office has advised the public to avoid non-essential travel due to harsh weather conditions, while police in Scotland have urged residents to postpone journeys amid deteriorating conditions. Yellow warnings for snow and ice remain in place across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
In February 2028, the powerful snowstorm known as the “Beast from the East” continued to wreak havoc across western regions, paralysing daily life. At least 17 people died in weather-related incidents across Europe during that time.
Cold air originating from Siberia pushed temperatures sharply lower across the continent, severely affecting normal life.
In the UK, intermittent snowfall continues in London and other regions, disrupting road traffic and public transport. The authorities took special measures to keep major highways operational.
Hundreds of train services and flights have been cancelled while hundreds of schools in England and Wales have been closed.
Despite the disruptions, many London residents were seen enjoying the snowfall.
Across Europe, temperatures plunged dramatically. In France and Belgium, temperatures have dropped to minus 10 degrees Celsius while Croatia recorded temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius following record snowfall. Spain is also facing severe cold, while rivers and canals in the Netherlands have frozen.
In parts of Germany, temperatures fell to minus 15 degrees Celsius.
France, Italy, and several other European countries reported a total of 17 fatalities linked to extreme weather and related accidents.
Beyond Europe, snowfall continues in northern parts of China as the severe winter conditions persist.
