PENNSYLVANIA – At least two people were killed and several others are feared missing after an explosion triggered a fire at a nursing home in a suburban area of Philadelphia, US media reported on Wednesday.
According to the reports, the blast caused a portion of the nursing home building to collapse.
The authorities confirmed two fatalities, while search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate several missing residents.
Pennsylvania Governor said that following the incident, local rescue agencies, nursing home staff, and residents acted swiftly to evacuate elderly occupants to safer locations.
As a precautionary measure, gas and electricity supplies to the facility were immediately cut off after the explosion to ensure the safety of rescue workers and nearby residents.
The initial investigations suggested that a gas leak may have caused the explosion; however, officials said a thorough inquiry is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
