Donald Trump said that the US and Israel had agreed to suspend any new military action against Iran, provided a swift agreement is reached to end the conflict that has persisted for more than five months.
The announcement came amid growing concerns of another major escalation after Trump warned that Iran could face severe military action.
Media reports had suggested that the US and Israel were weighing coordinated strikes on key Iranian infrastructure, including oil refineries and power facilities.
According to the reports, the two allies had been preparing possible joint military operations that could have taken place over the weekend, targeting strategic energy assets.
In a post on his Truth Social platform late Saturday, Trump said the United States was fully prepared for military action against Iran, describing America’s military readiness as unmatched since the Second World War.
However, he said he had decided to delay any offensive after receiving appeals from Iran and several Middle Eastern countries.
“Despite this, we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack,” Trump wrote.
He added that he had agreed to cancel the planned operation for the time being, saying the decision was made in the interest of global stability and Iran’s future prosperity, but stressed that it depended on the rapid conclusion of a deal.
Trump said any agreement must include the immediate and complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and measures to eliminate what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.
He also stated that Israel supported the proposed course of action, urging all parties to move quickly toward finalising an agreement.
The conflict has continued for more than five months since fighting began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched military strikes on Iran. Although hostilities had eased at times, recent weeks have seen renewed exchanges of attacks between the two sides.
Meanwhile, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Trump to express concern over the possibility of fresh US strikes against Iran. Saudi leader urged the US president to pursue de-escalation and avoid launching new attacks.
