Saudi Crown Prince Pushes for De-escalation in Call with Trump

Saudi Arabia Discusses Defence Deal With Us Ahead Of Crown Princes Washington Visit

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation focused on easing rising tensions in the Middle East, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Sunday.

According to media reports quoting US officials, the Saudi crown prince voiced concern during call over Trump’s reported plans to launch large-scale military strikes against Iran.

One US official said Saudi Arabia sought greater clarity on Washington’s intentions regarding the proposed military action. Another official said Mohammed bin Salman urged the US president to pursue de-escalation and avoid carrying out the strikes.

The reports stated several regional countries, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Turkiye and Pakistan, have been encouraging both Washington and Tehran to reduce tensions and avoid further escalation.

Meanwhile, Qatari mediators held separate discussions on Saturday with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Omani officials to explore a possible agreement for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The talks produced some progress, although it remains uncertain whether the developments will be enough to prevent the crisis from worsening.
