Varma had played for Hyderabad against Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Tuesday. While he did not suffer any injury during the match, he later experienced pain, which led to scans and subsequent surgery.
The BCCI added that Varma was discharged from the hospital on Thursday morning and is in stable condition. He is expected to return to Hyderabad on Friday.
The sources suggested that Varma’s availability for the entire T20 series against New Zealand, as well as India’s World Cup match against the United States on February 7, remains uncertain.
Tilak Varma has been a key player for India’s T20 squad in recent months, scoring 567 runs in 18 innings last year. No replacement player has been announced for the New Zealand series as of now.
