Thailand, Cambodia clash again in renewed border fighting

Thailand Cambodia Clash Again In Renewed Border Fighting

BANGKOK – Border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia flared once again as fresh clashes broke out between forces of the two neighbouring countries, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The international media reported that a spokesperson for the Thai military said Cambodian forces had expanded skirmishes to new locations along the border and increased the deployment of troops and weapons.

The spokesperson added that one Thai soldier was killed and seven others were injured during the latest exchange of fire.

He said Thai forces “responded effectively” to the Cambodian attacks.

In contrast, Cambodia’s Ministry of Defence accused Thailand of violating its territory by launching cross-border assaults. The Cambodian officials claimed their troops exercised restraint and did not retaliate.

The tensions between the two countries have escalated repeatedly this year.

In July, heavy border clashes resulted in dozens of casualties on both sides.

A ceasefire brokered by then US President Donald Trump during the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia in October briefly eased hostilities, with both governments formally signing the agreement.

However, within two weeks Thailand withdrew from the truce, accusing Cambodia of injuring two of its soldiers. Cambodia had also nominated former US President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in connection with the ceasefire efforts.
