The six-day period of public mourning held across Iran and five cities in neighbouring Iraq concluded with the burial of late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Mashhad
Funeral processions and condolence gatherings throughout the mourning period were marked by strong religious and political symbolism.
On the final day, large crowds once again took to the streets, with a procession making its way to the shrine of Imam Reza (AS) in the holy city of Mashhad. The shrine, renowned for its golden dome, is one of Iran’s most revered religious sites and is also located in Khamenei’s birthplace.
Supporters and religious followers attending the ceremonies carried Iranian flags, portraits of Ali Khamenei and placards demanding revenge for the brutal assassination.
Throughout the six-day ceremonies, Mojtaba Khamenei, Ayatollah Khamenei’s son and successor, did not appear in public. According to reports, he was seriously injured in the US and Israeli strikes that killed his father and other family members.
