KARACHI – The Sindh government is set to launch bio-gas powered buses in Karachi, a major move towards environmentally friendly public transport.
Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, announced that the process of procuring these eco-friendly buses has officially begun.
The announcement came after a high-level delegation from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) met with Minister Memon at his office in Karachi. The meeting focused on the financial support provided by ADB for ongoing transport projects and discussed future steps for enhancing mobility and transport infrastructure in the city. Asad Zamin, Secretary of Transport, and Fawad Ghafar Soomro, CEO of TransKarachi, also participated in the discussions.
During the meeting, the ADB delegation reaffirmed its commitment to assisting with current and future transport projects in Karachi, particularly in the areas of transport sustainability and mobility.
Sharjeel Memon emphasized that the Sindh government’s initiative to introduce bio-gas powered buses is a first for Pakistan. He stated that the aim is not only to introduce modern buses but also to ensure that the service provided meets international standards. “These buses will not only be environmentally friendly but will also be equipped with an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) for enhanced efficiency and passenger experience,” Memon said.
The Senior Minister further revealed that the Sindh government is set to start work on a bio-gas plant project in Karachi, which would support the operation of these buses.
The introduction of bio-gas and electric vehicles (EVs) is expected to play a key role in reducing pollution and promoting sustainable, eco-friendly transportation in the city.
Sharjeel said that these initiatives would not only address Karachi’s transport challenges but also contributed to global efforts to combat climate change by reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
The move aligned with the Sindh government’s broader agenda to modernize urban transport while fostering an environmentally sustainable future.
