KARACHI – The Sindh Drug Testing Laboratory has declared 79 samples of medicines and syringes substandard or counterfeit following tests conducted between January and July 13, 2026.
The laboratory’s latest testing report said that 79 out of 2,461 samples of allopathic medicines, herbal products and syringes failed to meet approved quality standards.
The report revealed that 30 samples of auto-disable syringes were found to be substandard or fake. Auto-disable syringes are designed for single use only, but some of the supplied syringes were found to lack a fully functional auto-disable mechanism, raising concerns that they could be reused.
The laboratory warned that reusing the same syringe on multiple patients could increase the risk of infections and compromise medical treatment. It added that properly manufactured auto-disable syringes play a crucial role in preventing the spread of blood-borne diseases such as HIV and hepatitis.
The report also found that 20 herbal products contained undeclared allopathic ingredients, while nine medicines were not registered with the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), raising further concerns over the quality and safety of pharmaceutical products available in the province.
