Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday directed the withdrawal of immunity for the PM in the proposed 27th constitutional amendment.
“On my return from Azerbaijan, I have learnt that some Senators belonging to our party have submitted an amendment regarding immunity for the Prime Minister. While I acknowledge their intent in good faith, the proposal was not part of the Cabinet-approved draft. I have instructed that it be withdrawn immediately”, he stated in a post shared on microblogging site X (former Twitter).

“As a matter of principle, an elected Prime Minister must remain fully accountable, both before the court of law and the people”, the post reads.
The PML-N and its coalition partners have moved the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment in the Senate, which grants constitutional protection to the top civil and military leadership. In addition to that, the amendment proposes a change in Article 243, seeking to abolish the “Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee” (CJCSC) position and introduce a new title, “Chief of Defence Forces”.
It also includes the establishment of a Federal Constitutional Court and revisions to the process of appointing high court judges. Reduction in the powers of the Supreme Court, with some authorities shifting to the proposed Constitutional Court, is also part of the proposed amendment.
