Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives and Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Professor Ahsan Iqbal on Monday said that when a nation is burdened by inflation, simplicity for those in power is not merely a desirable trait but a moral responsibility.
In a statement posted on X, Ahsan Iqbal cited the example of Hazrat Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, commonly known as Umar II, describing him as a “gem of Islamic history.”
Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz was the eighth Umayyad caliph and ruled from 717 until his death in 720. His reign was marked by administrative reforms, efforts to promote social equality and a strong emphasis on justice and accountability.
He is regarded by many Muslims as the fifth rightly guided caliph because of his piety, generosity, asceticism and commitment to justice.
Ahsan Iqbal said Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz had been a wealthy and privileged prince of the Umayyad dynasty and governor of Medina before assuming the caliphate.
