Rain of varying intensities with snowfall over the hills is predicted in parts of Pakistan during the upcoming week.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a westerly wave will likely approach western parts of Pakistan on December 29 (night). It will strengthen on December 30 and grip most upper/central parts of the country on December 31. It will likely persist in the upper parts till January 2, 2026.
Under the influence of this weather system, rains of varying intensities with snowfalls over the hills are expected in Pakistan during the upcoming week.
Balochistan & Sindh:
Rains with snowfalls over the hills are expected in Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah, Noushki, Harnai, Zhob, Kalat, Barkhan, Sibi, Loralai, Musakhel, Turbat, Gawadar, Jiwani, Lasbella, Kech, Awaran, Chagi, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Washuk and Kharan from December 29 (night) to December 31 with occasional gaps.
Isolated light rain/drizzle is expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Larkana, Thatta, Badin and surroundings on December 30.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa:
Rains with moderate to few heavy snowfalls over the hills are expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Bunner, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Waziristan, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Bannu, Karak, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank and Kohat from December 30 to January 01 with occasional gaps.
Gilgit-Baltistan/Kashmir:
Rains with moderate snowfalls over the hills are expected in Gilgit-Baltistan (Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Guanche, Shigar), Kashmir (Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur) from December 30 (evening/night) to January 02 (morning), with occasional gaps.
Punjab/Islamabad:
Rains with snowfalls over the hills are likely in Murree and Galiyat from December 30 (evening/night) to January 02 (morning), with occasional gaps.
Isolated rains are expected in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Potohar region, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura and Gujrat from December 31 to January 01, while in Mianwali, Bhakkar, Sargodha, Khushab, Noorpurthal, Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahimyar Khan, Bahawalnagar, Muzaffargarh, Jhang and Sahiwal on December 31.
Impacts:
Snowfalls may cause road closures/slippery conditions in Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, Galiyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, and Haveli.
There are possibilities of landslides/avalanches in hilly areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir. Tourists are advised to remain extra cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during the period.
Fog conditions will likely subside in the central/southern parts of Punjab and upper Sindh during the wet spell. Day-time temperatures are likely to drop further in the coming week, particularly after the spell.
