LAHORE – A delegation of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Wednesday met Punjab Secretary Home Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi to discuss measures for the protection of women and children and the prevention of sexual violence.
The UNFPA delegation was led by Country Representative Dr Loye Shabane and included Provincial Lead Tania Durrani, Hasna Batool and Momina Asad. During the meeting, the delegation briefed the secretary home on the preparation of the draft Punjab Sexual Violence Response Framework (PSVRF).
Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi informed the delegation about the Punjab government’s ongoing public welfare–oriented reforms, stating that the protection of vulnerable segments of society is a top priority of the CM Punjab. He said the government is strengthening legislation and institutions to eliminate sexual violence and is strictly implementing a zero-tolerance policy for the protection of women and children.
The secretary home further shared that an awareness campaign titled “Good Touch, Bad Touch” is being run to ensure the safety of minor children. He added that coordination among law enforcement agencies is helping ensure cases are taken to their logical conclusion.
A dedicated helpline has also been established on Emergency 15 for the protection of women and children while steps are being taken to enhance the capacity of the Punjab Forensic Science Authority.
The UNFPA delegation highlighted its efforts in policy formulation and stakeholder consultations aimed at eliminating sexual violence.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Loye Shabane said everyone wants to see their loved ones safe under all circumstances. She appreciated the cooperation and central role of the Punjab Home Department in developing a policy framework to end gender-based violence.
Special Secretary Home Fazal-ur-Rehman, Deputy Secretary Special Initiatives and other relevant officials were also present during the meeting.
