The Punjab government has announced a crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles ahead of the upcoming smog season.
Enforcement against polluting private vehicles will begin on October 15, said Punjab Transport Authority Secretary Hassan Ahsan at a press conference on Friday.
He claimed that the Transport Department, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other relevant institutions had jointly implemented measures to tackle smog, leading to noticeable improvement in air quality last year.
Ahsan said the number of fitness certificates issued to commercial vehicles had risen by 18%, while around 24 million vehicles were registered with the Excise Department. Vehicles will be issued annual stickers as part of the monitoring process.
Ahsan added that enforcement operations against vehicles would be conducted in collaboration with the traffic police.
