LAHORE – The Punjab Council of the Arts has issued a comprehensive set of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for family theatre productions across the province, placing strict restrictions on costumes, stage performances, scripts and conduct by artists.
The theatre productions must maintain a family-friendly environment and ensure that performances do not contain material considered inappropriate or objectionable as per the new SOPs
The SOPs artists will not be allowed to wear costumes that reveal body contours or are deemed unsuitable for family audiences. A specific restriction has also been imposed on shoulder-less and sleeveless outfits for female performers.
New SOPs
The council has further prohibited the use of cigarettes, alcohol and similar items on stage. Performers have been instructed to avoid inappropriate gestures, movements and actions during performances.
The new guidelines also regulate songs and dance routines, with theatrical productions required to remain within the limits prescribed by the authorities. Artists and production teams have been directed to ensure that all performances comply with the approved script and relevant cultural standards.
The SOPs make it mandatory for theatre organisers to submit scripts for approval before staging performances. Any changes to the approved script or performance content must also comply with the prescribed rules.
The authorities have directed theatre managements to ensure that shows begin and end according to the approved schedule. Artists who are absent or fail to fulfil their assigned roles will not be permitted to appear in a performance without the required approval.
The council has also instructed producers and theatre managements to follow security and administrative protocols, maintain proper records and ensure the availability of responsible staff during performances.
In addition, theatre venues have been directed to establish 24/7 security arrangements and maintain proper emergency preparedness.
The Punjab Council of the Arts said the measures were aimed at promoting family-oriented, disciplined and culturally appropriate theatre while ensuring that productions meet the standards set by the provincial government.
