LAHORE – The Punjab government is set to open applications for its Chief Minister Electric Bike Scheme for students across the province on Friday, September 4, 2026, as part of initiatives aimed at providing affordable transport facilities to young people.
A day earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has ordered that students should not be required to pay a down payment for the e-bikes being offered under the scheme.
She has also rejected recommendations seeking additional charges from students beyond their monthly instalments.
The provincial government will cover the interest and insurance costs associated with the electric bikes.
Monthly Installments
A proposal to set the monthly instalment at around Rs3,000 has also been agreed upon.
The chief minister has directed authorities to open the e-bike portal during the same week to facilitate applications from eligible students.
The scheme is initially focused on students, with the Punjab government also giving in-principle approval to gradually expand its scope to government employees, departments, the general public and delivery workers.
Transport Secretary Imran Sikandar Baloch briefed the authorities on the scheme and said eligible students would receive a helmet and safety rod along with their electric bikes at no additional cost. The bikes under the programme will be equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries.
The government has also planned free two-day training for students who wish to learn how to ride the electric bikes. The training will be provided under the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Authorities have further been instructed to take steps to ensure that eligible students receive their bikes within six weeks.
The scheme is expected to provide more than 125,000 electric bikes to students across Punjab.
