ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) decided to hold a meeting of its Central Executive Committee (CEC) under the chairmanship of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari at Bilawal House, Karachi at 7:00pm on Thursday (today).
The meeting would deliberate on the country’s prevailing political situation and the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment.
The party sources said that the meeting will review the government’s outreach to political parties, including the PPP, to seek support for the passage of the amendment. The CEC is expected to formulate the party’s official policy on the issue.
The proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment includes provisions for the establishment of a Constitutional Court, restoration of executive magistrates and the transfer of authority over judicial postings.
It also seeks to remove provincial protection in the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award and amend Article 243 pertaining to the command of the armed forces.
Furthermore, the amendment proposes returning education and population planning powers to the federal government and aims to resolve the ongoing deadlock over the appointment of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has already reached out to the PPP, and asked for cooperation for the amendment’s approval in Parliament.
The PPP’s CEC meeting, chaired by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, would finalize the party’s stance on whether to support or oppose the government’s move.
