PISJ-ES combats Covid-19 recession and Racism

Pakistan International School Jeddah – English Section (PISJ-ES) held its fourth Model United Nations conference – a simulation of the United Nations aimed to develop students’ cognisance of current affairs, diplomatic norms and international relations.

The three-day conference was conducted in a unique virtual environment, adapting to the restrictions of prevailing circumstances. His Excellency Khalid Majeed, Consul-General of Pakistan graced the occasion with his presence as chief guest.

One Hundred delegates, representing fifty members states, attended the conference ‘online’ through an elaborate technical setup where they engaged in purposeful debate on this year’s bi-thematic agenda.

Delegates discussed “The Economic Resonance during the COVID-19 Pandemic” under the Second Committee (ECOFIN) while the Third Committee (SOCHUM) held its session on “Racism: Promoting the Rights of Minorities and Indigenous People”.

A thirteen-member Secretariat oversaw the proceedings from the decked Auditorium, ensuring uninterrupted streaming and decorum of the conference.

The programme formally commenced with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran followed by the national anthems of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The Secretary-General, Mariam Akmal, opened the conference with her speech.—PR
