ISLAMABAD – An initial inquiry report into the incident at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has been submitted to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the sources close to the development said on Saturday.
The report was prepared by an inquiry committee headed by former interior secretary Shahid Khan and was submitted late at night to the office of the prime minister’s adviser, Tauqir Shah.
Sources said Shahid Khan formally submitted the report, which was subsequently forwarded to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The prime minister has also been briefed about the report’s findings and recommendations.
Members of the inquiry committee have confirmed that the report has reached the Prime Minister’s Office. The authority to make the findings public rests with the prime minister.
According to sources, the report has been signed by all members of the inquiry committee. It identifies the factors behind the PIMS incident and determines responsibility for the failures linked to the episode.
The report also highlights difficulties faced by rescue teams during emergency operations. It recommends disciplinary action against relevant PIMS employees who were found absent during the incident.
The committee has also proposed measures aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. Interviews with PIMS administrators and doctors have been incorporated into the report, along with statements from fire brigade and rescue personnel.
Sources said the report also raises concerns about treatment facilities and the availability of essential services at the hospital. It reportedly observes that several aspects of the facility and its response mechanisms do not meet international standards.
The inquiry committee has recommended that immediate action be taken against those held responsible for the shortcomings identified in the investigation.
The prime minister is expected to decide whether the report and its recommendations should be made public and what action should be taken against those found responsible.
