The Gold & Gems Art Promotion Council of Pakistan (GGAPCP) has welcomed the government’s decision to establish the country’s first-ever National Gems Authority, calling it a landmark initiative that could transform Pakistan’s gems and jewellery sector.
Council President Muhammad Ahmed said the creation of the Authority marks a significant step toward unlocking the country’s vast gemstone potential. He noted that despite Pakistan’s abundant reserves of precious and semi-precious stones, the industry has struggled to reach its full capacity due to weak policies, insufficient standardisation, limited branding, and inadequate international marketing.
According to Ahmed, the National Gems Authority is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s gemstone exports while promoting locally sourced gemstones in global markets under Pakistan’s own identity. He added that the move could help curb the practice of neighbouring countries, particularly India, marketing Pakistani gemstones under their own brands, allowing Pakistan to receive greater international recognition and increased export revenues.
He expressed optimism that the Authority would address administrative, technical, and commercial challenges facing gemstone exporters, leading to higher foreign exchange earnings and contributing to economic growth.
Ahmed also pointed out that the gems industry has witnessed a prolonged decline because of limited government support and ineffective policies, prompting many skilled craftsmen and professionals to leave the sector. He said the new Authority could help revive the industry by introducing modern technology, professional training, certification systems, research initiatives, and internationally recognised quality standards.
The GGAPCP president urged the government to establish National Gems Authority offices and service facilities in all provinces to ensure equal access for exporters, traders, and other stakeholders across the country.
He further called for representatives from the gems and jewellery industry to be included in the Authority’s governing and advisory bodies, saying their participation would help shape practical, industry-focused policies and improve implementation.
