KARACHI – In the aftermath of the catastrophic floods that ravaged Pakistan in 2022, farmers from Sindh province have announced their intention to file a lawsuit against two major German companies, RWE (an energy giant) and Heidelberg Cement.
These companies are among the largest polluters globally, and the farmers hold them responsible for contributing to the environmental crisis that led to widespread devastation in their region.
The farmers, who lost their lands and livelihoods due to the unprecedented flooding, have sent formal notices to the companies, demanding compensation for their losses. They have warned that if their claims are not addressed by December, they will proceed with legal action.
The farmers argue that despite contributing minimally to global carbon emissions, Pakistan has borne the brunt of the climate crisis. “We have contributed the least to the environmental disaster, but we are suffering the most, while wealthy countries and corporations continue to profit,” said a spokesperson for the affected farmers.
The floods, which submerged a third of Pakistan’s land area, caused an estimated $30 billion in economic damage, including the destruction of agricultural land, homes, and infrastructure. In Sindh, some districts remained underwater for more than a year, and the farmers estimate that their losses exceed €1 million.
RWE and Heidelberg Cement have acknowledged receipt of the legal notices but have yet to comment further on the matter.
According to the British media, the Global Climate Risk Index has ranked Pakistan as the most climate-impacted country in 2022, following the country’s devastating monsoon rains that led to the loss of over 1,700 lives and displaced over 33 million people.
