MUSCAT – Oman has proposed a joint regional mechanism to manage the Strait of Hormuz, under which Iran would not have sole control over the strategic waterway, the international media reported while citing Gulf sources.
The proposal, which has reportedly gained support from several regional countries, would introduce a voluntary fee system to help finance navigation, environmental protection and maritime rescue operations in the strait.
The plan is modelled on the management framework used in the Strait of Malacca, where countries and commercial operators using the shipping route voluntarily contribute funds to support its maintenance, safety and emergency response capabilities.
If implemented, the mechanism would ensure shared regional oversight of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil and gas shipping corridors, rather than exclusive control by any single country.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held separate telephone conversations with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan to discuss the latest developments in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, the ministers exchanged views on bilateral relations, regional developments and the evolving situation in the strategic waterway.
The three diplomats also underscored the need to strengthen regional cooperation and intensify diplomatic efforts to preserve stability and maritime security in the Gulf region.
