LAHORE – At least nine people were killed after the roof of a residential building collapsed in Lahore’s Harbanspura area, officials confirmed.
Lahore Deputy Commissioner retired Capt Muhammad Ali Ijaz said that rescue operations were underway at the site, with teams working to recover any remaining victims trapped beneath the debris.
Rescue 1122 personnel, along with district administration officials, took part in the operation, while heavy machinery was deployed to clear the rubble and speed up recovery efforts. The deputy commissioner directed officials to ensure the safe removal of those still trapped and ordered an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse.
The incident adds to a series of recent roof collapse tragedies in Punjab.
Last month, a roof collapse at a tuition centre in Lahore’s Kahna area resulted in the deaths of 14 children. Authorities later registered a case against the centre owners and contractor, citing the additional load placed on the weakened structure.
In another incident in Dera Ghazi Khan earlier this year, four children died and 20 others were injured when a classroom roof collapsed during ongoing construction work. An inquiry found that excessive weight from construction materials contributed to the collapse.
