ASHGABAT – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday warned that a new wave of terrorism is emerging from Afghanistan and urged the international community to press the Afghan authorities to fulfill their security-related obligations.
The prime minister said that declaring 2025 as the International Year of Peace was a welcome development. He reaffirmed that Pakistan continues to play an active role in promoting global peace and that the peaceful resolution of conflicts remains a core pillar of the country’s foreign policy.
He was addressing the Global Peace Forum in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on Friday.
The prime minister highlighted Pakistan’s contribution to the peace initiative for Gaza, noting that the plan was approved with Pakistan’s support. He expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Iran for their cooperation in efforts toward a ceasefire. He added that Pakistan is continuing its efforts to restore peace in Gaza, and stressed that UN Security Council Resolution 2788 reflects Pakistan’s vision for long-term ceasefire and uninterrupted humanitarian assistance in the Middle East.
Shehbaz Sharif said that sustainable peace and sustainable development are interlinked, and emphasized the importance of equitable access to modern technologies. He said financial inclusion and the economic empowerment of women remain top priorities for his government.
The prime minister reiterated that a renewed terrorist threat is rising from Afghanistan, calling on the global community to ensure that the Afghan government meets its commitments.
He said Pakistan’s clean and green development model stands as a global example, adding that climate change and inequality are major challenges for developing nations. He noted that many countries face increasing risks from climate-related impacts and stressed the need to translate the forum’s discussions into practical action. The world, he said, must move beyond zero-sum thinking and embrace collective cooperation, not only by boosting trade but also by building bridges that connect people and ideas.
